FRISELL!
LIVE IN BIRMINGHAM
17TH MAY 2024
Opening this new international series from Stoney Lane Live, one of the greatest living jazz guitarists comes to Birmingham with his trio (Thomas Morgan – bass, Rudy Royston – drums) for an intimate and unforgettable performance with the most nimble, conversational and spontaneous of on-stage collaborations.
They’ll delve into the wonderful catalogue of Frisell works old and new, alongside classic standards, jazz, popular and folk songs as deeply lyrical as they are adventurous. A rare opportunity to see this extraordinary musician live in the city, in the beautiful acoustic surrounds of Royal Birmingham Conservatoire’s Bradshaw Hall.
“ … Afropop, country-western, Brill Building pop, atmospheric electronica—the performances represent jazz playing at its most sublime. And music seldom gets more “together” than that.”
Downbeat ★★★★★
“As the trio delved into the musical tapestry, their synchronized breaths transformed the space.”

More about our label …
Stoney Lane Records is an independent artist-led label, growing out of a whole host of musical inventions, collaborations, experiments, friendships and performances, centered around the city of Birmingham, UK. We focus on distinctive and exciting new music and artists that we love, venturing wherever the music takes us – often with jazz at its heart, yet crossing the eclectic worlds of improvisation to contemporary classical, electronics to world and roots-inspired music.
Already the Stoney Lane catalogue is home to recordings featuring the exceptional talents of Chris Mapp, Hans Koller, Mike Fletcher, Paul Dunmall, Percy Pursglove, Sara Colman, Steve Banks & Trish Clowes to young musicians burgeoning from Birmingham and beyond, including Alex Woods, Ben Lee, David Ferris, Jonathan Silk, Mark Pringle, Xhosa Cole and Young Pilgrims, to leading lights Arve Henriksen, John O’Gallagher, Peter Bernstein, Stan Sulzmann, Steve Swallow and the NDR Bigband.
(‘Stoney Lane’ was the home of West Bromwich Albion, from 1885 to 1900, a time when they actually won something for a change. Our catalogue numbers follow a similarly misguided path).
